Working from a home office has a way of softening the edges of personal style—long hours at the computer can slip into a rotation of uninspired staples: slouchy knits, well-worn sweatpants, comfort over intention. At least, that’s where Karen and I found ourselves after a year of building MyMaine from the ground up.

As women who have always found joy in the ritual of getting dressed, we felt called to mark this milestone with a sartorial reset—packing away the overly casual and reintroducing pieces that reflect both who we are and where we’re going.

With an eye toward refinement and ease, we turned to Janet Kooyenga, owner of Josephine at the Shops at Falmouth Square, to curate looks that move effortlessly from daytime meetings to evening gatherings with friends—each ensemble capturing that luminous, golden-hour energy that defines a Maine summer

For those just discovering Josephine, how would you describe the woman you curate the shop for?

janet:

Josephine is built for style enthusiasts who want to feel confident, current, comfortable and effortlessly put together. Each piece is thoughtfully curated for the season, whether that means heading away on a vacation or staying put to enjoying all Maine has to offer.

What do you love most about your location under The Residences at the Wyeth?

janet:

It’s a great alternative to going into Portland. Not only is there parking, but you can browse decor at Le Marchande, have a glass of wine at Revel, and even work out at Reframe Fitness. The best part? All businesses at The Wyeth are women owned.

What are a few summer trends or standout pieces for a Maine summer you’re especially loving right now?

janet:

The sentiment right now is easy, expressive and individual. How to wear one piece in multiple ways—a preppy cardigan paired with either a silk skirt, a barrel leg jean or wide leg linen pants and a multicolored patterned scarf; flexible options for varying daily schedules.

What is a perfect layering piece to have on hand for unpredictable Maine weather?

janet:

I recommend having a light weight linen blazer, soft knit wraps, or a summer weight cardigan on hand so you can stay stylish and comfortable.

How do you strike that balance between timeless investment pieces and of-the-moment styles?

janet:

Investment pieces are the foundation of your wardrobe that you will reach for over and over again, while layering in current trends, whether it’s color, texture, accessories, or silhouette.

Do you have a current favorite in the shop—something you’re reaching for again and again this season?

janet:

I am loving all things linen in this season’s neutrals: cream, soft blue, navy, muted green, and washed black, aligning with Maine’s landscape and lifestyle.

How do you think great style can shift how a woman feels in her day-to-day life?

janet:

You set your mood each morning by what you choose to wear. Great style inspires confidence–the most important accessory to leave the house with.
