Make Yourself at Home
Forget red and green—think candlelight, velvet ribbons, and a table that glows like a winter’s dream

After decades of blindingly bright, Crayola green-and-red Christmas décor, I have finally retired from grandma’s colorama explosion. Now, the vibe has shifted from “Santa’s workshop on a sugar rush” to “elegant winter retreat with hot cocoa and a Pinterest board.”
It’s still merry—but with better lighting and a muted color palette. Overly saturated, cartoon-like colors are gone, and in their place have emerged color schemes that showcase refined individuality. It’s a good thing, too, because as I get older, I find myself jumping the holiday gun.
There is something comforting about twinkling lights and garlands that makes the cold winter months feel a little warmer—and I’m in no rush to pack that feeling away. There are several dreamy holiday décor trends this season, but for now, I’ll share my top two favorites. First, a scheme inspired by my store, Le Marchande—filled with timeless European charm—and second, the simple magic of bows, which instantly transform the ordinary into the festive.
1. The Wintery European Picnic
Imagine stepping into a cozy wintery cottage in the heart of the Cotswolds, where the scent of pine and a crackling fire greet you at the door. The holiday décor is a serene dream instead of loud colors and flashy lights. Delicate twinkle lights are woven through evergreen garlands, handmade ornaments, and a sense of quiet magic fills every corner.
I agree that images speak louder than words, and I really wanted to bring this wintery picnic to life. I started by layering the cozy cottage table with a soft green-and-white linen tablecloth that sets a charming, homespun foundation. I then added burgundy and sienna accents—taper candles, napkins, and vintage glassware—to add warmth and a touch of rustic richness, perfect for the season.
Mismatched flatware brings character and a sense of collected history, while amber-hued glass and glints of sterling silver catch the candlelight just right–this combination casts a golden glow across the table. It’s an inviting, lived-in look that feels equal parts nostalgic and effortlessly elegant—like a holiday meal shared in a storybook setting.
2. Bows!
Bows are arguably the most significant trend right now, taking over holiday decorations this year in every way and becoming the defining detail of the season. No longer just an accessory for gifts, bows show up absolutely everywhere. When I started shopping for this holiday season at Le Marchande, my first purchase was velvet bow napkin rings, and my assortment has grown from there. Bows are making their way to tree toppers and mantel garlands, to tablescapes, wreaths, and even as standalone wall décor. I wouldn’t categorize bows as sophisticated, but they are truly irresistible. Oversized bows create a dramatic, whimsical statement, while smaller ones add delicate, thoughtful touches throughout a space. To add a touch of warmth and elegance to our feature tablescape, we tied rich, deep chocolate velvet ribbon into simple bows on the backs of our dining chairs. It is an easy yet impactful detail that brought texture, depth, and a hint of seasonal charm to the setting—proof that small touches can make a big impression.
